Adult Literacy (EDUCATION FOR ALL)

1. Who is an adult non-literate?

Any person who is 15 years of age or above and is unable to the perform more than one or all of the below

  • Read aloud at a speed of 30 words per minute
  • Read and understand Road signs, Posters, and news papers
  • Understand and copy 7 words per minute
  • To take dictation at the speed of 7 words per minute
  • Read and write numbers from 1 to 10
  • Perform Simple Arithmetic Calculations

2. Why do we need to implement the Adult Literacy program?

Almost one third of the world’s adult non-literate live in India which is approximately 27 crores. As per census 2011, the literacy rate of India was 74.04% which by next census is expected to touch 80% at the most. Until we make these adults literate, the dream of becoming a totally literate country would never be fulfilled. Literacy alleviates poverty, and by making the country literate we would be taking steps to alleviate poverty in India.

3. What is ILM’s Adult Literacy Program?

India Literacy Mission (ILM) has set a goal of making 5 Crore adults literate by the year 2030. ILM is using a Two-fold method to achieve this goal:

a. Vidya Each One Teach Many (EOTM)-Centre based model. Local Volunteer Teacher/Prerak will identify non-literate adults in the community and run adult literacy classes at a common place.

b. Diksha- Each One Teach One

  • Through Diksha or Each One Teach One (EOTO) Model One individual will teach One adult non-literate (15+age) over a minimum period of 60 days using the adult literacy primer developed by ILM.
  • Through Diksha schools will be actively involved and School children from class 6 and above will be encouraged to teach one adult illiterate.

4. Who is a Akshar Sathi?

Akshar Sathi can be anyone who is above the age of 15 and is willing to teach a group of non-literate adults. ( Refer Vidya model)

5. Who will identify the adult non-literate?

The adult non-literate is identified through a household survey conducted by the NGO/University/College.

6. What is the adult literacy portal?

The adult literacy portal is the platform where all resources on the adult literacy programme can be viewed as well as where registrations take place.

7. How to register at the Adult Literacy portal?

The adult literacy portal is the platform where all resources on the adult literacy programme can be viewed as well as where registrations take place. In order to register please go to www.adultliteracy.ilmteach.org and choose ‘Vidya’ thereafter follow steps as per the registration video.

8. Is Adult Literacy Portal Registration Mandatory?

Yes, portal registration is mandatory for all stakeholders.

9. Who needs to register at the Adult Literacy Portal?

The Rotary and Lions club etc./ NGO/ University/College/Akshar sathi/ Adult learners need to register unto the portal.

10. What is the study material to teach Adult learners?

ILM has devised a Toolkit to teach the Adult learners. This consists of two books-Disha & Pathan. Each book consists of 37 pages developed by ILM and are available in Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Odiya, Gujrati and Kannada to teach literacy and numeracy to the adult learners. It has simple teaching instructions and is very user-friendly.

11. How to order for Adult Literacy Toolkits?

Orders can be placed through the adult literacy portal or by directly contacting ILM through an email.

12. How much time does it take to make an adult literate?

If ILM primer is used, it normally takes 60 days to complete the course.

13. How long is one teaching session?

Each teaching session is for a minimum of 45 minutes but not more than 60 minutes

14. When are the examinations to be held for the adult learners?

Once the primers are completed and all the forms uploaded and the learners are ready to take the examinations. The partners need to inform ILM and request for question papers. Once the papers are received the exams can be held notifying ILM on the exam dates.

15. Who corrects the answer sheets?

The answer sheets are to be corrected by the centres taking the exam.

16. What is the pass marks?

There is no pass or fail marks. We encourage all learners to write for the exams.

17. What are the next steps after exams are conducted?

After exams are conducted, the marks need to be uploaded on the portal

18. Do adult learners get certificates?

Yes, absolutely! After the primer is completed and they take an examination, their certificates can be directly downloaded from the website.

19. When do we get the certificate for the adult learners?

The certificates can be downloaded from the portal after the exam marks have been uploaded for the adult learners by the Akshar sathi.

20. Do Akshar sathis get certificates?

Yes, Akshar Sathi too gets the certificate after their registered adult learners have taken an exam.
